Tarr Chronicles Review

October 31st, 2007

I previewed Tarr Chronicles for Whichgame.net last month - and found an enjoyable arcade space combat title with a surprising tactical subtlety. And I’m glad that Quazar, who have now released the game through publisher Akella, haven’t decided to tamper much with what was already a very polished, professional effort.

  Sound 3/5

When I first previewed this title, I called Tarr Chronicles ‘infinitely recommendable’ – and I’ll stand by that. It’s by no means an innovative game – X-wing, Starlancer and many other space combat titles are obvious inspiration for Akella’s new release – but it does everything with tremendous amounts of energy and panache. The graphics are great, the storyline familiar yet new and absorbing. The missions are varied enough to keep you interested, and the combat itself, often the selling point of a game like this, is fast, frenetic and well-balanced, with the extra tactical input of ship modification creating depth that’s a welcome distraction from the few, very minor, problems: Tarr Chronicles is out now and you’ll enjoy if you’ve picked up a space combat game before. And, if you haven’t, give it a go – it’s a fantastic introduction to the genre.

    Tarr Chronicles GameSpot First Impressions

    September 24th, 2007

Tarr Chronicles is a space sim being developed by Russian developer Kvazar Studio. Like old-fashioned space sims, such as Freespace or TIE Fighter, Tarr Chronicles is all about climbing into a nimble space fighter and dogfighting it amongst the stars. At the same time, the game also promises a considerable amount of customization, along with some cutting-edge graphics.

Like almost every space sim, Tarr Chronicles qualifies for space-opera status. The game is about a lost human fleet that discovers an ancient city on a mysterious planet. This event triggers a fierce alien response, and you, as one of the fleet’s fighter pilots, must fly to defend the Battlecruiser Talestra as it attempts to make its way home. That involves plenty of dogfighting in up to 60 customizable fighter craft, ranging from fighters and bombers to corvettes, which are basically heavy fighters. The enemy in this case is the alien De’Khete, a race that is only described as unstoppable. But it’ll be up to you and your wingmen to try.

Flying around in Tarr Chronicles can be done in third-person view, with you seeing your fighter onscreen, or first-person view, staring out the front of your cockpit. Either way, your job is to shoot down enemy craft, using lasers, missiles, rockets, and more. Interestingly, the game will not feature joystick support, but you can fly using the mouse and keyboard or a gamepad. Your wingmen will be intelligent enough to follow you around and support you, but you won’t have to issue them orders or commands. The missions will range from simple intercept to escort and more, but they sound like the standard type of space-sim missions.

An interesting aspect of the game is that you are automatically rewarded with resources after each mission, and you can then combine the many types of resources together to create a myriad of devices, such as better shields or a new type of weapon. Then, you can choose from more than 150 standard parts. When you consider that there are 60 customizable ships in the game, that’s a lot of specialized craft you can create. Meanwhile, there are nine missions in the game, each with up to 15 “quests” in them, so it sounds like you’ll have plenty of opportunity to try out each different craft. The game only has the single-player campaign, as there won’t be any chance to go online in multiplayer.

Visually, Tarr Chronicles looks advanced. The ship designs in the game look futuristic and sleek, hanging against a beautifully lit void. The lighting and shadowing effects capture the “deep space” feel of the setting. You’ll also dogfight near glowing nebulas and impressively rendered planets. When you put it together, Tarr Chronicles is a game that could get space sim fans excited again. However, they’ll have to wait a few months because it won’t ship until September.

    Tarr Chronicles: Sign of Ghosts

    September 24th, 2007

Game world is a unique universe called Tarr. In Tarr there is no light and dark sides, no right and guilty. It is the world where all the races have united against one enemy, where the struggle is not for resources, but for life. For the life of the dying galaxy.

Battlecruiser Talestra – the flagship of Aliiance Forces – was sent in a remote star system to guard some science groups exploring a long ago abandoned city of ancient race. But owing to a break down in its hyperengine Talestra comes in the wrong part of galaxy. And now the crew has to make a long way to their home: through the worlds populated with alien races, through deserted, desolate systems and sectors controlled by the main enemy of the galaxy - De’Khete.

The main character is a pilot of elite fighters squad, which is a part of Talestra’s combatant forces. Together with other crew members player will have to overcome all the severities fallen to the lost cruiser’s lot. All the pilots of player’s squad are controlled by AI: they follow the player’s ship and help in battles. Moreover companions report about their maneuvers and give advice on combat tactics. But companions aren’t just soulless dummies but self-dependent persons every of which has its own point of view on life and fights. Only acting as a part of a team you can reach your goal.

Between missions player can change its ship’s equipment. For this needs it is provided with a set of various blocks and subsystems – hulls, engines, cannons, rocket launchers. For the services in battle player gets new ranks and opportunities to serve in other Talestra departments, what gives player an access to the hangars with new equipment and weaponry.

Interesting and diverse missions, detailed storyline with intrigues and unexpected turns, dynamic battles in deep space and in planetary orbits, dizzy flights – all this creates an unforgettable feeling of presence in game. This project is not people play, it’s a whole world you will live and fight within to break away from the depths of hostile space and to come back to your native land.

    Game features:

    • 9 unique missions, connected by a deeply detailed storyline
    • Create your own spaceship, combining various parts and equipment: more than 150 unique wings, engines, cannons, rockets and other subsystems
